"Abstract Red Orange" is richly layered and deeply meaningful.
I began this painting with a fully loaded large brush which I slathered along one edge so the paint would pool fully along the edge. Then, I lifted the edge up so the paint would run in rivulets down to the other side of the canvas. By adding controlled amounts of paint to various areas along the edge, I was able to achieve a fairly even distribution of rivulets along the edge. With the streams of paint running fully along the face of the canvas I lowered the edge back down and quickly lifted the edge perpendicular to the one I had previously held. Rivulets ran in lines perpendicular to those that served as their source. This technique was very immediate and expressive while conveying an almost mathematical precision or uniformity.
Harnessing the energy of both the expressiveness and the precision, I loaded my brush and created the radiating oval patterns which float on top creating what appear to be two figures. While this abstraction can be evaluated and perceived in any number of ways I continue to see it most often in one way, which I choose to keep to myself. After all, it is much better for you to have your own interpretation.
My favorite parts are...
The almost figurative forms of the foreground.
The play between what is shown and what is obscured. |
