"Abstract Blue Too" is undoubtedly abstract while having a strong figurative quality to the foreground elements. The varied application techniques of the predominantly blue paint present a simplified sort of "zone system" of blues. The shapes also run the gamut of solid to transparent.
Although the work is not illustrative it would be easy to cast the shapes into roles portraying animal or human representation and interaction. While the brushstrokes are as much an exploration of expression as anything else I couldn't help but notice a similarity to the environments and ornaments found in nearly every Dr. Seuss book, particularly the feathery, midnight, nearly invisible blues which barely pek out from the background.
The deep blue blackness of the background conjures up images of deep space as if we are perched on the edge of a black hole and the foreground elements are doing a final dance before darting off at warp speed into the great unknown!
I like...
The depth created by the play between the flat black and the ultramarine, midnight blue vs. the shallower depth created by the juxtaposition of the straight smooth, even strokes of the light blue field with the twisted, sploogey stroke which hover out in front. The use of white. |
